Hello, is anyone still out there?

Well, I have not fallen off the face of the homeschooling earth (thanks for checking in on me Marsha!); in fact, I am more determined than ever to manuever the unknowns and make a long-term go at educating the kids myself. Their school has been notified of my intent and I have registered "The Sabourin Academy" with the Indiana educational department. I have a huge project which needs to be completed by July and then I will buckle down and make a plan regarding our start date and curriculum. At that time, I will step things up on the old blog here as I will really be needing some support and suggestions. You know something? I am excited, truly excited to spend this time with my children. I am glad to have a legitimate excuse for pulling myself together and growing up a little. I've been tossing the extra junk around here and studying books about establishing schedules. I feel confident that this is the best choice for us as a family. So come with me on this journey, whether you've homeschooled for years (we need your wisdom) or are toying with the idea of it (you can learn from my mistakes)! We can thrive as homeschooling mothers; I believe that with all of my heart!

Onya Molly, I love hearing about this journey you're taking with your family.

I wanted to share something that bugs me about the current school system here... we send our daughter, 6 (and soon our second daughter, 5) to a private Christian school. So she's out of the house from 8:15am until 3:30pm. Then we have homework (daily reading, daily spelling, daily arithmetic, weekly oral presentation and short essay) each night. Oh, and violin practice. There goes most of her day. What about playing at home? Only two hours each day at the very most. And we've been worrying that our children aren't developing their ball skills. Why? Is it because ball skills are important in moral or spiritual formation, or in a career path? No. It's because being good at ball skills helps you fit in at school. It's all very bothersome.

An afterthought... I guess it's not half as bad as high school children in South Korea. According to Korean students who come here to study English, most Korean high school students are at school from 7am until 11pm 6 days a week. I find it hard to believe but enough of them told that story, independent of each other, that I have accepted it. They say that's the only way to be competitive in South Korea now.

Oh good then! Thanks for sticking with me! I totally understand, Selena, about the lack of down time for kids. It was important that I experienced all the stress and extra work that goes into getting kids ready in the mornings and calmed down in the afternoons so that I wouldn't keep telling myself next year that things would be much "easier" if the children were in school! Thanks also, by the way, for the book suggestion! I just cleaned out my closet (again) in an effort to keep only the clothing I feel good in and will wear consistently - no more duplicates!

I was wondering how you were doing. I should have asked too.

I'm with you -- every step of the way. Remember your choices fit your family. There isn't a "one size fits all" nor "one size fits each child". Discover, Learn -- it is trial & error -- and Grow...you'll be transformed!
We call our first born the "Guinea Pig"...poor Colin :)

So, I'm curious, what's the new schedule? Will you start it come summer, or have a little vacation time before fall? A schedule... there's a novel idea... We do like the idea of a schedule around here. It's just a matter of implementing! So hard.

Where in Indiana are you? We should try to plan a "field" trip together!

Welcome to homeschooling. My 10 yr old daughter and I found your blog this morning. My daughter exclaimed, "Yeah, more Orthodox homeschoolers! You should write her, Mom." Hence, my comment here. I've enjoyed your writing for awhile, Molly, and look forward to more now that we have even more in common. I've hs'd ten years; ds did high school in two years and is now in college. Dd is in 5th grade. Relax. Do not worry about gaps. Pray! Victoria in Tucson, AZ

Welcome to homeschooling! I've read your other blog and heard your podcasts and will look forward to reading about your adventures in homeschooling. My son "officially" starts homeschool kindergarten this year, although we won't be changing too much of what we've already been doing so far. It's an exciting journey and I hope the transition will be a smooth one for you! Rebeca

Hi Molly! I "met" you on Orthodox Circle a while back. . . . I'm a second-year homeschooler this year. I just started keeping a blog about what we do, so I thought I'd share. It's slowly shaping up, but not lots yet. The other blog on my profile is a fasting blog I've been keeping since Lent 2007. Hope this coming year is great for you! I am treasuring getting to school with my kids.

Molly, just checking in since you haven't written here in a while. Everything going okay? MY little man is in Kindergarten this year and it about kills me to go off to my high school to teach and leave the kiddos to someone else's care each day. We're making do until my husband graduates.

Pray for us, if you think of it. We are praying about homeschooling next year.

I have been homeschooling for 13 years and have 8 children--we are in Northwest Indiana too. If you need help with anything drop me a line!

Many blessings as you begin your homeschooling endeavors...

Oh my. I looked at the date and thought, "Oh good, she's blogging here again." Then I saw I'd already commented on this post and went back and looked at the year. :P

So how's the last year of homeschooling been? I'm going to be joining you with my eldest this year... I think we're going to use an early education curriculum called "Five in a Row." It's based on classic children's literature. :) Keep us posted!

Hi Molly,
Are you still blogging here? I hope so, I would love to "follow" you! I'm also an Orthodox homeschooling mom (or will be, my son's only two and a half).
Hope to read more from you!
